Professor Margaret Gardner commenced as Vice-Chancellor and President of RMIT University on 4 April 2005. Professor Gardner has had a prominent career as an academic, working in a number of Australian institutions including Griffith University, the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, and Deakin University. She has been a member of various committees in the areas of the arts, education and industrial relations, and is currently a member of the Council of Australia Latin American Relations (COALAR) and Chair of their Education Advisory Group, Higher Education Research Reference Group, LH Martin Institute Advisory Board, Australian Technology Network, the Australian Defence Force’s Reference Group on Women, Australian-American Fulbright Commission Board, the ANZAC Centenary Advisory Board and a director on the Open Universities Australia Board. Professor Gardner currently chairs the Museums Board of Victoria, RMIT International University Vietnam Pty Ltd and RMIT Vietnam Holdings Pty Ltd. Dr D’Souza has worked for RMIT University for close to 30 years as an academic member of the School of Computer Science & Information Technology (College of Science, Engineering and Health). He currently also serves on NTEU committees at branch, state and national levels. Dr Gilmour has extensive experience as a senior manager in government and not-for-profit organisations. Ms Lever has held executive positions in a range of Victorian government departments including Community Services, Health, and Labour and Industry, and board membership of the Peter McCallum Hospital and the Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare. Mr Murphy is a teacher in the School of Education in the Design and the Social Context College. Professor Nieuwenhuysen is Emeritus Professor, Monash University and Honorary Professorial Fellow, University of Melbourne. Prior to this he was CEO of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA). He has a broad range of experience in the public sector and in education including the International Labour Office and the British Department of Trade and Industry and has worked at the Universities of Melbourne, Pittsburgh and Natal. Prior to CEDA he was the Foundation Director of the Commonwealth Bureau of Immigration, Multicultural and Population Research. John’s work has encompassed immigration, cultural diversity, equity, economic development, taxation, indigenous, labour and industry issues, and the reform of the liquor laws of Victoria. Professor Nieuwenhuysen has chaired four separate Victorian State Government inquiries on revenue raising, liquor reform, multicultural legislation, and hardship accounts in the energy industry. He brings to Council experience in Australian and international private and public sector research and in educational and governmental issues. Ms O’Donnell has over 25 years management experience across a number of industries including information communication and technology, utilities, education and government. She was previously CEO of Freshtel Holdings, leaving the organisation in 2009 to become an independent consultant and company director. Prior to joining Freshtel, Ms O’Donnell was the CEO and Chair of Novell Asia Pacific, a global provider of Linux (open source) technologies and identity management solutions. She was responsible for the management of Novell’s entire Asia Pacific operation encompassing 13 markets with more than 800 employees and an extensive partner network and was a member of Novell’s worldwide management committee which provides strategic planning and direction for the Company’s global operations. Ms O’Donnell was awarded the Victorian Telstra Business Woman of the Year in 1999. Under her leadership, (as Managing Director), Global Customer Solutions won Victorian Call Centre of the year in 1999 and Australian Call Centre of the Year in 1999. Mr Pekarek has over 35 years experience in industry. From 1996 to 2003 he was the Chair and Managing Director of Siemens Ltd. in Melbourne, responsible for Siemens’ business in Australia and New Zealand. Prior executive positions held with Siemens were in the company’s power generation group in Germany. Mr Pekarek’s particular focus included corporate strategy, business development, leadership and organisational development, project management, and international technology transfer. From 2004 to 2007, Mr Pekarek was Chair of Boulder Steel Ltd. and a Director of Asia Pacific Seamless Tubes Ltd. Ms Pierce is currently working as Manager Planning and Resources in the Office of the Director TAFE. Professor Reid is the Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor, Learning and Teaching in the College of Science Engineering and Health, as well as Chair of Academic Board, and is responsible for providing strategic leadership in learning and teaching at the University and College level. She has broad experience in academic leadership, teaching and program development. She was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) from December 2009 to August 2010, and has held a range of academic positions including Foundation Discipline Head of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Head of School of Medical Sciences. Professor Reid completed her doctorate in the discipline of pharmacology, and her research interests are focused on the development of new therapeutic strategies to treat cardiovascular problems associated with diabetes mellitus. She has held a number of research fellowships at the University of West Virginia in the US, Astra Cardiovascular Research Laboratories in Gothenburg, Sweden and the University of Melbourne. Ms Thorn was the Secretary of the Department of Health until December 2011, where she was responsible for a portfolio covering health, mental health and aged care. Previous appointments include: Secretary, Department of Human Services; Secretary, Department of Innovation Industry and Regional Development; Under Secretary with the Department of Sustainability and Environment; and Deputy Secretary of the Policy and Cabinet Group in the Department of Premier and Cabinet. Between 1996 and 2001 Ms Thorn was a Director of KPMG Consulting Pty Ltd in Australia and then Hong Kong. She primarily consulted to the education sector and Government, providing advice on policy implementation, program evaluation strategy, costing and refocussing service delivery and future directions at Government and the funded institution level. Prior to joining KPMG, Ms Thorn had 17 years experience in public sector administration. She has been actively involved in managing implementation of reforms in government service delivery in education and training at a system-wide level and in the management of human resources at a public sector-wide level. Dr Wulff has extensive experience in landscape architecture and natural resource analysis, gained in a range of projects including detailed design and implementation for the built and natural environments and regional resource studies. Dr Wulff has been a Director with Tract Consultants Pty Ltd since 1974 and in 1996 became Managing Director, a position he held until taking a specialist Strategic Director’s role in 2008.
